City of Mauldin Awarded the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award

The Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) awarded the City of Mauldin with its Distinguished Budget Presentation Award, based on the City’s 2020-2021 fiscal year budget (FY2021). The award recognizes the City’s efforts in producing comprehensive budget documents and financial reporting.  The award is a first for the City of Mauldin and is reflective of the City Council’s commitment to responsible fiscal stewardship and transparency.   “We are excited to be recognized for our budget reporting efforts and will continue working hard to improve in the future,” said Finance & Policy Committee Chairperson Michael Reynolds. “The City’s annual budget represents Council’s policy decisions on how taxpayer dollars are being spent and we were able to take those decisions, which can involve complex financial mechanisms, and present a budget document that is concise, understandable, and transparent,” added Reynolds.

The award represents a significant achievement by the City. It reflects the commitment of the City Council and staff to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting.  In order to receive the budget award, the City had to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation.  These guidelines are designed to assess how well the City’s budget serves as:

  • A policy document
  • A financial plan
  • An operations guide
  • A communications device

The award was presented to the City following the submission of its FY2021 budget.  “This is a major achievement for our city, as it is the first time in our City’s history that we have received this award,” Mayor Terry Merritt said.  “Every budget cycle has its challenges.  This year was no different especially given the ongoing impact of the coronavirus global health pandemic, but I am proud of the City Finance Department and our City leadership making sure the City’s budget was clearly communicated to our residents,” added Merritt.

As the primary department designated to prepare the city’s annual budget, the City’s Finance Department will also receive a Certificate of Recognition for the Budget Presentation.  To view the City’s FY2021 budget, visit the city’s website at www.cityofmauldin.org.
