City of Mauldin completes sewer rehabilitation project funded by $3.4M grant

The City of Mauldin has completed a sewer rehabilitation project that repaired and upgraded aging wastewater infrastructure to extend its lifespan and maintain safe, efficient operation.

The project was funded by a nearly $3.4 million grant from the South Carolina Rural Infrastructure Authority (RIA), which was awarded in 2023 as part of the South Carolina Infrastructure Investment Program (SCIIP). The City of Mauldin contributed approximately $600,000 in local match for construction and engineering services related to the project.

The focus of the project was rehabilitating deteriorating clay sewer pipes that were installed more than 60 years ago.

Work included cleaning and inspecting 13.8 miles of sewer main line in areas where both REWA and the City identified potential issues. Once inspected with closed circuit television, contractors completed 42 sewer main line repairs and installed 218 linear feet of new main line pipe.

Contractors also installed nearly 10 miles of Cured in Place Pipe (CIPP) within vitrified clay piping throughout the investigated area. The CIPP installation creates a seamless, jointless new pipe directly inside a damaged existing pipeline without heavy excavation. Its installation will extend the lifespan of the collection system piping for another 30 years.

As part of the rehabilitation, contractors also repaired 38 service laterals, made 27 manhole repairs and completed the rehabilitation of 109 sewer manholes.
