Mauldin City Council appointed Donald “Bart” Cumalander to serve as the City’s Recreation Director during its August 17, 2020 meeting. Mr. Cumalander, who has served as interim Recreation Director since February 2020, replaces former Recreation Director Joe Lanahan, who resigned from the Department earlier this year.
“Mr. Cumalander has a wealth of recreation and park management experience that will serve the Recreation Department well as the City continues to grow. I am confident that he will do a great job,” said Mayor Terry Merritt.
Mr. Cumalander has served in the City Recreation Department since August 1989. He has worked through the ranks of several positions within the Department and has served as the Assistant Recreation Director since 2003.
City Recreation Committee Chairperson Dale Black echoed Mayor Merritt’s sentiments. “Over the past year, the City has invested heavily in its parks and recreational amenities. Bart has been a key contributor to the successful implementation of those investments. His experience in parks and recreation, and commitment to the City has proven that he is the right person to lead the Department,” said Councilperson Black.
Mr. Cumalander is a graduate of Mauldin High School and resides in Greenville County with his wife, Erin, and their two sons. “The staff of the Recreation Department is one of the best in the state, and I am honored to be appointed to lead the Department. I look forward to providing excellent recreation services to the residents of this City,” said Cumalander.
