Monday night, City Council approved the second reading of an ordinance to place a 1% sales tax on the November ballot. Residents will now have the opportunity to vote on the measure on Nov. 3.
The sales tax would generate an estimated $24.5 million in revenue for the City, with $19.6 million going towards infrastructure improvements and $4.9 million going towards property tax relief.
Infrastructure improvements would include the following:
- $15.6 million for the repaving and improving of roadways, including drainage systems, curbs and sidewalks
- $4 million for Fire Station 5
If passed, the sales tax would begin on May 1, 2027 and remain in effect for up to 8 years.
Council voted 5-1 to pass the ordinance on second reading at a Special Called City Council meeting on Aug. 3.
“We want to allow our residents the opportunity to vote,” said Council Member Carol King. “This is just one avenue that we can address the problems that we have within the City, if that’s what our voters so choose to vote on.”
