Mark Steenback

Mark Steenback

Seat 6

Elected in November 2023

Committees: Building Codes (Chair), Economic Planning & Development, Recreation

Mark Steenback grew up in the Golden Strip area and is a graduate of Southside Christian. After going to college and playing baseball on the West Coast, he was happy to move back home with his wife, Shawna, in 2004. Mark, Shawna, and their four boys moved into Planter’s Row in 2018 and immediately began integrating into the community. After being introduced to advocacy and local government while working on behalf of his and surrounding neighborhoods to keep the ability for their kids to attend Mauldin High School, he found a passion for local politics.

“As a political agnostic, I was the most shocked by my interest and desire to remain involved in local government,” Steenback said. “My hope and goal is to be a voice for the citizens of our city. I believe it’s my job to carry out the will of the individuals that live in our City.”

Mark spends most of his free time as a volunteer coach in various recreation programs throughout the Upstate, including Mauldin City baseball and flag football leagues.

“Service has always been an important part of my life,” he said. “I know that I was created to work so that others can benefit.”

His other interests include fishing, gaming, making and enjoying BBQ with friends, watching sports — especially his favorite teams, Clemson and the Seattle Seahawks — and spending time with his family.

The board consists of seven members that are nominated and appointed by Mauldin City Council. The term length is three years and the term will expire on July 1 of the third year. There are no term limits for the Building and Zoning Board of Appeals.

The Board typically meets in the evening as needed when an application has been received for their review.  The frequency at which they meet can vary from meeting in consecutive months to going several months without meeting.

Election Commission

The responsibility of the Municipal Election Commission is certifying municipal election results after each regular election every two years and after any special or runoff election. The commission term is four years and some online training is required.

The City of Mauldin is seeking Mauldin Residents to fill three vacancies on its Election Commission.

The three-member Election Commission is an appointed body by City Council that calls for run-off or special elections and certifies election results. Applicants must be Mauldin residents and registered voters. Participation on the Election requires being present at the Voter Registration Office in Greenville County Square at least one time after every municipal election, for approximately one hour.

Applications from Mauldin residents will be accepted until vacancies are filled by City Council. Completed applications can either be hand delivered to City Hall at 5 East Butler Road or emailed to: Mauldin City Clerk, Cindy Miller at cmiller@mauldincitysc.com.

Mauldin Cultural Council

The Mauldin Cultural Council was founded in 2004. It is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization whose mission is to “…enhance the quality of life in Mauldin through the arts.”  The Mauldin Cultural Council assists the City’s Office of Cultural Affairs in support of continuing to develop the Mauldin Cultural Center and other cultural initiatives throughout the community.

The Mauldin Cultural Council’s mailing address is PO Box 1136, Mauldin, SC 29662.

Planning Commission

The City of Mauldin’s Planning Commission is responsible for the development and redevelopment of the City. The Planning Commission develops and executes a continuing planning program for the social, physical, and economic growth of the City. Other duties include monitoring and updating the City’s Comprehensive Plan and Zoning Ordinance.

The commission consists of seven members who are nominated by City Council. To be eligible, one must be a Mauldin resident. The term of office is three years and expires on July 1 of the third year.

The Planning Commission typically meets on the 4th Tuesday of the month at 6:00 PM.
