Trigger warning: this post contains references to themes of sexual assault, which some individuals may find distressing.

The Mauldin Police Department is now accepting applications for a Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) class that will teach women how to defend themselves in the event of an attack. The free program is open to women age 14+ and includes classes on May 13, May 20 and May 27 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Mauldin Fire Department headquarters at 955 W. Butler Rd.

What is R.A.D.?

R.A.D. training gives women real techniques to reduce risk and defend against attackers. The nine hours spent in this class could potentially save a life.

In the Mauldin Police Department’s R.A.D program, it only takes a few hours a couple of nights a week for participants to learn how to defend themselves in the event of an attack. The class teaches students simple, realistic self-defense maneuvers and gives them tips about how to recognize and reduce risk in different types of situations.

Program Goals

While the program is focused on achieving some important goals, it is also designed to be a comfortable, informal environment for students. Participants can tailor the activity level to their needs and take breaks whenever needed. Although not overly demanding, it is a physical course, so students are encouraged to come dressed in athletic or workout clothing, including tennis shoes so they can move around easily.
