Gregory Saxton, a dynamic leader with nearly 15 years of experience in local government, has been appointed to serve as Mauldin’s first-ever assistant city administrator. In this newly created position, Saxton will assist City Administrator Seth Duncan in managing daily municipal operations, including organizing, planning and directing assigned departments and functions of the City of Mauldin to ensure effective and efficient operations, and assisting in the execution of policies and programs to meet the City’s goals and objectives. Saxton begins in his new role on Nov. 5.

“We are excited to welcome Gregory Saxton to our community and the leadership team at the City of Mauldin,” City Administrator Seth Duncan said. “Gregory is a forward-leaning public servant who is focused on building strong communities. He will undoubtedly provide an added boost to the leadership team, as he will be responsible for many of the City’s day-to-day operations.”

Saxton comes to the City with 14 years of municipal experience. In his most recent role, he served as town administrator for the Town of Awendaw, S.C., where he provided strategic leadership and direction to six municipal departments, ensuring efficient and effective delivery of services to residents and managing a budget of $2.26 million. Prior to that role, he served as assistant town administrator/treasurer for the Town of Awendaw for 11 years, honing his skills in administration, planning, budgeting, financing and project management.

“I am super excited about joining the strong Mauldin community and family,” Saxton said. “Warren Bennis once said ‘Leadership is the capacity to translate a vision into reality.’ And I believe that Mauldin’s vision is about to be a reality, and everyone will know the City of Mauldin.”

Saxton holds a master’s degree in public administration, a bachelor’s degree in theater and political science, and a certificate in urban and regional planning, all from the College of Charleston. He is a graduate of the 2021 Public Executive Leadership Academy (PELA) through the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and the 2021 Local Government Leadership Institute (LGLI) through the South Carolina City & County Management Association. In his free time, he enjoys serving at his church, cooking for friends and family, and ballroom and salsa dancing.

The assistant city administrator position was created to provide additional leadership and administrative support to accommodate the City’s rapid growth. Since 2010, Mauldin has grown from a community of just under 23,000 residents to more than 29,000 residents today. That number is projected to increase to 35,000 residents by 2030.

City Council unanimously voted to appoint Saxton as assistant city administrator at their meeting on Aug. 5.

“I’m thrilled to welcome Gregory as our assistant city administrator and look forward to the positive impact he will make in this new position,” Mayor Terry Merritt said. “With his municipal experience, leadership skills and collaborative spirit, Gregory will be a tremendous asset to our growing community, and I’m confident he will help lead the City of Mauldin into a bright future.”
