Under sunny skies on Wednesday morning, the City of Mauldin, Hughes Investments and Greenville Pro Soccer celebrated a major milestone — the groundbreaking of a new sports and entertainment stadium at BridgeWay Station.

The event featured a special appearance by soccer legend and Greenville Triumph co-owner Ronaldinho, widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time. Fans turned out in droves to see the soccer superstar and celebrate the historic moment, many of them waving signs, chanting Ronaldinho’s name and sporting jerseys, scarves and memorabilia.

Approximately 1,000 people attended the event in total, including local dignitaries, business and community leaders, residents and soccer enthusiasts.

Slated to open in 2026, the stadium will serve as a permanent home for the Greenville Triumph and Greenville Liberty soccer clubs, in addition to hosting other professional and youth sports matches, concerts, festivals and community events.

Mayor Terry Merritt said the stadium will create jobs, boost the local economy, bring people together and put Mauldin on the map as a premier location for sports and entertainment tourism in South Carolina.

“What we’re celebrating today is more than just a construction project — it’s the creation of a community asset,” Mayor Merritt said. “We’re excited about what this project means for Mauldin’s future in terms of sports and entertainment programming, economic vitality and community connections. Together, we are creating something special here in Mauldin.”

Looking ahead

The stadium design is still being finalized, and Greenville Pro Soccer is working on a comprehensive parking plan with the City of Mauldin, local schools and businesses, BridgeWay Station and other partners. The final operations plan will include a comprehensive strategy for parking, pedestrian safety and mobility, traffic flow, rideshare operations and shuttling services for major events and game days. Once these plans are finalized, they will be shared with the public.

Many thanks to everyone who joined us on Wednesday to celebrate a historic moment for the City of Mauldin, BridgeWay Station, Greenville Pro Soccer and the entire Upstate region.
